algae: merismopedia

my first culture of the merismopedia is coming along well :)

it showed up at the house on Apr. 17, 2018; alga-gro freshwater medium was added to its jar.
it has been exposed to the local beetles/etc., and so far has shown no problem with the germs/etc. it has been exposed to.

by the naked-eye, it appears somewhat granular (not coarse), compare to eucapsis which grows similarly but more in cubes, not flat rectangles as the merismopedia... the eucapsis appears as more of a "finer" green dust.

algae: eucapsis

culture first arrived Apr. 17, 2018.
added "soil water" medium to its jar (it prefers acidic/peaty water)
seems to be resistant/unaffected by the beetles/germs/etc.

to the naked-eye it appears to be motionless (at the bottom of the jar) and a bit "finer" a dust-blanket, compared to merismopedia.
the colonies are known to be somewhat cube-like, and rather small (cubes of 4, 8, 16, pairs but easily broken), whereas the merismopedia creates similar groups but only as a flat rectangle....

algae: fischerella

first culture arrived Apr. 17, 2018.
added "soil water" medium, and algae seems resistant to beetles/germs/etc.; it is noted to prefer acidic/peaty mediums and live subaerophytic (in decaying matter).

by the naked-eye, the colonies resemble soft "clouds", looks like dark green cotton candy.
the filaments are barely visible.

the algae is similar to tolypothrix, except the fischerella has "genuine branches" and appears a bit graceful; whereas, the tolypothrix has "false" branches and tapered ends (points) to the branches.

algae: tolypothrix

first culture arrived Apr. 17, 2018.

added "soil water" medium; the algae seems resistant to beetles/germs/etc.
filaments are a bit visible (appearing more fuzzy than fischerella); colonies forms much smaller balls (appearing as tiny pellets, and not "clouds" of cotton candy)

they create "false" branches, and the branches are tapered at the ends.
